The beginning of Dev and Ryan's story was distinctively 21st century. It started with a man, sitting at his laptop, in his apartment, playing with his match.com account. That night, he tried searching for women with "Rugby" in their profiles. The first result was a particularly attractive Jewish woman, who owned a company that taught kids to play rugby, played rugby herself, and had the cutest dog on the planet. He wrote.
Much to his surprise, he woke the next morning to find a message back from her, suggesting that they go out. A few days later, they had their first date at Crif Dogs in the East Village.
They chatted about their rugby injuries (a fruitful subject for these two).
They moved on to drinks at Bua, across the street. He got a Guinness. She got a sangria. They chatted some more--about college and their careers. When the waitress came by to ask if they wanted another drink, he looked down and his half-drunk beer and declined. That made her think that he was having a bad time, but he was just nervous and caught up in the conversation. (Despite how the story ends, Dev still doesn't entirely believe Ryan on this.)
They texted throughout the next day...
"U R GR8"
and had their second date (and first kiss!) that next night.
After that, things took the form of a more traditional New York City romance, with home-made dinners made in too-small apartment kitchens, impromptu lunch meetings at a special spot in Central Park, and casual chats on the subway.
She comforted and stood by him through months without a job. And, two anniversaries later, he saw her through her own bout of unemployment. After seeing each other through thick and thin, when Stanford University came calling for Dev, they knew they were ready to embark on an adventure together on the West Coast.
This past Spring, Dev and Ryan began settling into their new California life, but they each did so with a secret. Ryan's secret was the ring the he kept locked in his desk at work. At least, he thought it was a secret. See, Dev's secret was that she'd stumbled upon his purchase and knew about the ring.
Almost two months passed with no sign of a proposal (that Dev could see). On July 2nd, when Dev's birthday got off to a very bad start, she finally spilled the beans about her secret. She had to know if something was wrong. Did they backtrack?
He took a deep breath and just told her to go get ready for work, and she did.
Once Dev was in the shower, Ryan sped to his office, retrieved the ring, and sped back home. He pulled Dev onto the porch of their new home, held her hands, and told her that he was waiting to plan something special, but couldn't let her go another day thinking that he might not be ready. He then got down on a knee, told her that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and asked her to marry him.
(This website means she said yes.)
